It was tough work this week at Leapfrog PR when the crew decided to celebrate World Chocolate Day with a chocolate tasting.
The team bravely chomped their way through 15 artisan and speciality chocolate bars, ranking each for taste, texture, aroma and packaging appeal, but the results were very much a matter of taste.
Managing Director Felicity Read explains: “We sought out local and artisan chocolate producers and looked at a broad variety of flavours, covering firm favourites such as milk chocolate and salted caramel and more interesting flavours such as coffee and cardamom and rose and violet cream.
“We found that people’s chocolate preferences fell into two camps – those who like darker, more adventurous taste profiles and those who preferred the slightly sweeter profiles. However, somewhat to our surprise, the overall winner was a vegan dark chocolate that was everyone’s favourite – Willie’s Cacao Ginger Lime.
“We were really impressed with the quality of these chocolate products which are not mainstream and are all regionally produced. We were also really impressed with the quality of packaging, much of which from these producers is sustainable and recyclable.”
The overall winner was Devon-based Willie’s Cacao with 127 points out of a possible 150, followed by Nailsea-based Ooh! Chocolata Milk Chocolate with 119 points. Three brands tied for third place on 118 points: Cambridge-based Ombar Cocoa Milk, which is also vegan, Swindon-based Lick the Spoon Rose & Violet Cream and Wales-based Coco Pzazz Milk Chocolate.
